Jackson Laboratory - Genetics research laboratory proposes expanding to our
County
Join Dr. Mark Pritchett, Senior Vice President for Community Investment of
the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice (GCCFV), for an update on the
proposal to create a biomedical research village in Sarasota County in
partnership with the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System, the University of
South Florida, the GCCFV and the County.
Jackson Laboratory - Florida, an expansion of the 1300 employee Bar Harbor,
Maine based independent, nonprofit research lab, plans include a 120,000 square
foot personalized medicine institute which would conduct research on diabetes,
Alzheimer’s and heart diseases. Over 20 years, Jackson and their partners
anticipate the creation of 2,200 high paying jobs in Sarasota County. A
significant investment of public and philanthropic dollars will be needed to
land the deal, with one scenario envisioning a contribution of $100 million from
the state over 3 years, $100 million from the County and $128 million in
philanthropic contributions. Your NACA Board believes that this is a timely and
important subject for us learn about. Please come prepared to listen, learn, and
ask questions of Dr. Pritchett!
The Ribbons of Venice
Using the Legacy Trail and the Venetian Waterway Park as the backbone of a
local trails plan, Greg Vine, Phil Ellis & Chris Shiparski, members of Venice
Area Beautification Inc. (VABI), will share their concept for connecting area
parks and points of interest in a network of bicycle and pedestrian paths in a
presentation entitled The Ribbons of Venice. VABI was responsible for the
construction of the Venetian Waterway Park that now connects the Legacy Trail
and downtown Venice to Caspersen Beach and Shamrock Park via the multi-use trail
along the Intracoastal Waterway.
Local History Exhibit in the Works for Nokomis Park
While The friends of The Legacy Trail (FLT) are thrilled with the addition of
the overpass across US 41 By-Pass, the detour around the construction zone
presented a bit of a dilemma as the group began planning the 2nd Annual Tour de
Parks Fun Ride. The Venice Train Depot hosted the 338 riders for a very
successful 2010 inaugural event, with more riders expected for this years ride.
The Friends of Nokomis Parks (FNP) came up with a simple solution. Host the 2011
Tour from Nokomis Park! In addition to acquainting trail users with the many
amenities the Park / Community Center / Legacy Trailhead includes, the Tour de
Parks event offered an opportunity to share some of the legacy of our community,
the original Venice, Florida. Nokomis resident Nancy Eaton, working with the
Venice Archives has assembled a preliminary four panel display outlining the
area’s history from 1868 to the present that the Friends of Nokomis Park hope
will become a permanent addition to the facility.

Here's the EEZ Presentation |

In reading the map above (EEZ), the light yellow area is low density
residential (ex. - compatible/consistent with neighboring
development), and the darker yellow is medium density yellow,
perhaps some form of attached housing. When new development is adjacent to
existing development there will also be requirements for visual &
distance buffering between the areas. Typically, the two
developments don't want to see each other. New
development also has to result in either neutral or improved storm
water management. The EEZ Goals Include:
1. Create a permanent employment center (in addition to
construction jobs); 2. Create community that will foster
greenhouse gas reduction (compared to traditional development); 3.
Employ low impact design (optimizing green space); green
construction; 4. Create multi-modal transportation plan. |
